Saint Leo records five top 20 performances including a 1st place finish from Matuszczak and 11th from Tancic
SAINT LEO, Fla. – The Saint Leo University men's and women's track and field teams turned in five top 20 performances during its first day of competition at the prestigious Florida State University Relays in Tallahassee on Friday.
Highlighting the first day for the Lions was Rafal Matuszczak who turned in a first place finish in the men's 10,000-meter run. The freshman recorded a time of 31:26.88, just less than 28 seconds ahead of second place finisher, Chris Yanichko from fellow Sunshine State Conference foe Florida Southern.
Herns Agyemang-Duah turned in a solid performance in the men's 400-meter run with a time of 48.71, which was good enough for sixth place.
In the 1,500-meter run, Jelena Tancic finished the women's event tied for 11th with a time of 4:41.09. On the men's side, Niclas Bez turned in a time of 4:02.62 which was good enough for 14th.
Rounding out the Lions' top 20 finishers was Valentin Lenz taking 17th in the men's 5,000-meter run with a time of 15:31.20.
Finishing just outside the top 20 in their respective events were Carl Dunne and Thomas Watson. Dunne posted a 23rd place finish in the men's 1,500-meter run with a time of 4:07.21, while Watson was 26th in the men's 400-meter with a time of 52.92.
Also competing today for Saint Leo in men's events were: James Mullins in the 1,500-meter (31st, 4:14.04), and Rafael Lohner (35th, 16:08.13), Adam Urbaniak (47th, 16:41.70), Patrick Hill (50th, 16:15.20), Kyle Vanburen (58th, 17:37.43) and Kevin Papac (60th, 17:53.45) all in the 5,000-meter run.
Allison Knipe was the only other female – in addition to Tancic – to compete on Friday. She turned in a time of 22:21.91 in the 5,000-meter run, which was good enough for 36th place.
Members of the men's and women's track and field teams will return to action on Saturday in the final day of competition in the FSU Relays.
