#6-seed Women's tennis falls to #3-seed Florida Southern, 5-1

SAINT LEO, Fla. – The Saint Leo women's tennis team, the No. 6-seed, fell to the No. 3-seed Florida Southern, 5-1, in the Sunshine State Conference tournament quarterfinals on Thursday afternoon at IMG Academy in Bradenton.

The Lions opened up with a 1-0 lead after freshmen Kristyna Jurkova and Fabiola Cardenas grabbed an 8-4 win at Flight No. 3 over Lorena Rionda and Megda Stepnick.

However, Florida Southern would win the next two doubles points. They claimed their first point at Flight No. 2 as the Mocs Selin Devrimci and Lola Asis topped Maja Pindelska and Katherine Zaatini, 8-4.

The third doubles point was earned by FSC's Sasha Nionova and Linnea Skymberg over Marine Beugre-Guyot and Madeleine Gauthier, 8-6, at Flight No. 1.

In singles, it was a three-set match that went for the Mocs that opened up the scoring. Natalija Popovic took down Gauthier, 6-2, 0-6, 6-0, at Flight No. 5.

Asis grabbed the next point for Florida Southern as she topped Zaatini, 6-4, 7-6, at Flight No. 6.

The match was at Flight No. 1 as Nionova took down Beugre-Guyot, 7-6, 6-4.

The Lions finished the regular season with a 9-7 overall record.
