Freshman Given Nod after Helping Lions Achieve Most Successful Season in Program History
SKILLMAN, N.J. – Women's tennis freshman Anastasia Wagner has been tabbed the 2014 Intercollegiate Tennis Association Division II South Region Rookie of the Year, league officials announced, Thursday.
The Singen, Germany native has compiled an 8-6 overall record, including a 2-1 record at No. 1 singles as she faced some of the toughest competition in DII throughout the season. In doubles competition, Wagner is 11-8 overall, including pulling in a 6-2 mark at No. 2 doubles as she was teamed up with Maria Benkirane, Paula Montoya, and Laura Kemkes throughout the season.
Currently ranked 48th in the nation, she has helped the Saint Leo women's tennis team reach a No. 6 ranking overall, the highest in program history, and has been an integral part in helping the Lions reach their first ever trip to the DII Women's National Tournament.
Wagner and the sixth-ranked Lions will square off against No. 3 BYU-Hawaii in the NCAA Division II Women's Tennis Round of 16 on Wednesday, May 14. The Lions and Seasiders are slated to begin competition at 8 a.m. at Sanlando Park, home of the 2014 Division II Men's and Women's Tennis Championships hosted by the Sunshine State Conference and Central Florida Sports Commission.
