Rain Delay Makes No Difference as No. 7 Saint Leo Rolls Through No. 37 Florida Tech, 8-1
Lions Win 12th Straight; Advance to 3-2 in SSC Play
MELBOURNE, Fla. – Inclement weather that forced a postponement from the previous day made no difference to the seventh-ranked Saint Leo women's tennis team as they rolled through 37th-ranked Florida Tech by a final score of 8-1 on Sunday morning at DeSoto Park.
The win marks the Lions' 12th-straight victory of their spring campaign, and advances their overall record to 14-3, and 3-2 in Sunshine State Conference action. The loss drops FIT to a mark of 10-10, and 1-5 in conference play.
The match resumed with the Lions leading 3-1 after storms in the area postponed Saturday's match. The Lions swept doubles on Saturday before the delay, with the 24th-ranked tandem of Paula Montoya and Anastasia Wagner picking up an 8-6 win in the top seed over the duo of Natasa Vukovic and Meritt Rabson.
Laura Kemkes and Pauline Helgesson took down Chloe Chanley and Jessica Widmark, 8-6 in second flight doubles, while Maria Benkirane and Adrianna Daszkiewicz earned an 8-1 win over the third-slot team of Katie Close and Flavia Zisi Tegou.
The Panthers earned their lone win at No. 6 singles before the storms hit, as Aly Ruschak was awarded the victory by default with Saint Leo not playing.
Both teams picked up where they left off on Sunday morning, with Saint Leo holding onto its 3-1 advantage. Coralie Pesenti battled back to pick up a win in the top flight, defeating Vukovic in a drawn out battle, 3-6, 6-1, 14-12, while Kemkes earned a 6-3, 6-2 win at the second seed, taking down Chanley.
Benkirane won at the No. 3 position, defeating Widmark, 6-0, 6-1, while Montoya earned a 6-3, 7-5 victory over Rabson at No. 4 singles. Daszkiewicz made easy work of Close at the No. 5 seed, earning a 6-0, 6-1 win.
The Saint Leo women's tennis team has four more matches before Sunshine State Conference tournament action, beginning with a match against Florida Southern on Wednesday, April 2. The Lions will take on the Moccasins at the Saint Leo Tennis Center beginning at 3 p.m.
