No. 8 Lions Take Down NAIA No. 6 Embry-Riddle, 6-3
Lions Earn 13th Win of the Season
DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. – The eighth-ranked Saint Leo women's tennis team took down the NAIA No. 6 Embry-Riddle Eagles on Wednesday afternoon by a final score of 6-3 at the Crotty Tennix Complex. The win advances Saint Leo to a mark of 13-3 on the season, while Embry-Riddle drops to a record of 7-5.
The Eagles got an early two points when the Lions defaulted at No. 6 doubles and No. 3 singles. The No. 1 doubles team Laura Kemkes and Pauline Helgesson took down the ERAU tandem of Kristina Marova and Hui-I Huang, 8-5. Maria Benkirane and Anastasia Wagner followed suit, defeating the Eagles' second flight tandem of Anna Gotz and Paola Montero, 8-2 to finish doubles competition.
Coralie Pesenti kept the Lions' moving in the right direction, defeating Hui-I Huang 6-1, 2-6, 6-1, followed by Kemkes who took down Gotz, 6-2, 6-0 at No. 2 singles.
Benkirane defeated Marova, 2-6, 6-2, 6-2, in the third flight, but Wagner retired in the fourth seed, giving Paula Ortiz the win.
Pauline Helgesson picked up a 6-2, 6-2 victory over Meena Bennett at the No. 5 position to wrap up the day for Saint Leo.
