Lions Make Easy Work of Bears En Route to Eighth Win of Season
SAINT LEO, Fla. – The eighth-ranked Saint Leo women's tennis team made full use of their home court advantage, and defeated the No. 11 NYIT Bears by a score of 8-1 on Saturday afternoon as the Saint Leo Tennis Center. The win advances the Lions to 8-3 on the season, while the Bears drop to a mark of 3-2.
The Lions jumped out to an early 3-0 lead after doubles play as the tandem of Anastasia Wagner and Paula Montoya defeated Justyna Krol and Madalina Florea, 8-6 at No. 1 doubles. In the No. 2 slot, Laura Kemkes and Pauline Helgesson took down the duo of Sara Burinato and Gabriela Siembab, 9-2, while Maria Benkirane and Adrianna Daszkiewicz earned an 8-3 win over Melanie Benyadi and Alessia Rossetti in No. 3 doubles.
Saint Leo closed up shop in singles action with ease, as Kemkes made easy work of Krol at No. 2 Singles, 6-3, 6-1. Wagner took down Benyadi at No. 3 singles, 6-4, 6-1, while Benkirane earned a hard-fought 1-6, 6-4, 10-4 win over Siembab at No. 4 singles. Montoya picked up a 6-2, 6-3 win over Borgenhoff at the No. 5 position, while Daszkiewicz defeated Rocie Benavent, 6-1, 6-1 at the No. 6 position. Coralie Pesenti surrendered the Lions' only match of the day dropping to No. 30 Burinato, 6-2, 6-0 at No. 1 singles.
The Saint Leo women's tennis team returns to action on Wednesday, March 19, when they take on Erskine College in Hilton Head, South Carolina.
