SAINT LEO, Fla. – The eighth-ranked Saint Leo women's tennis team took down the seventh-ranked West Florida Argonauts by a score of 6-3 on Saturday afternoon at the Saint Leo Tennis Center. The win advances the Lions to 6-3 on the season, while West Florida drops its first match of the season and falls to a mark of 8-1.
The Lions found themselves leading 2-1 after doubles play, thanks to wins at the No. 2 and 3 slots. The Tandem of Laura Kemkes and Pauline Helgesson defeated Kat Kikosavljevic and Giovana Patitucci, 8-2 at the No. 2 spot, while Maria Benkirane and Adrianna Daskiewicz took down Nina Bubelova and Fernanda Amaral, 8-3.
Singles play saw the Lions take four of six flights en route to their sixth win of the season. No. 20 Kochanova defeated Coralie Pesenti, 6-3, 6-0 at No. 1 singles, but Wagner picked up a hard fought win at the No. 2 position over Faure, 7-6 (12-10), 6-4.
Kemkes earned the win at No. 3 singles over Bubelova, 6-0, 6-2, while Benkirane fought back after falling in the first set to Dikosavljevic, 2-6, to take the final two sets 6-4, 6-2, to win at the No. 4 position.
Amaral defeated Helgesson after a drawn out fight at No. 5 singles. Helgesson took the first set 6-4, but Amaral bounced back to win the next set 7-6 (7-2), before taking the final set 10-7. Daszkiewicz rounded out singles action with a win over Sarai Flores at No. 6 singles, 6-4, 6-2.
The Saint Leo women's tennis team returns to action on Wednesday, March 12, when they host Saint Mary's (Texas), at the Saint Leo Tennis Center. Match time is slated for 3 p.m.
