Eighth-Ranked Saint Leo Breezes By No. 50 Wayne State, 8-1
Lions Sweep Doubles En Route to Fifth Win of Season
SAINT LEO, Fla. – The eighth-ranked Saint Leo women's tennis team swept doubles en route to an 8-1 victory over No. 50 Wayne State (Mich.) on Friday afternoon at the Saint Leo Tennis Center. The win advances the Lions to 5-3 on the season, while the Warriors drop their first contest of their spring 2014 campaign, and fall to a mark of 2-1.
The duo of Anastasia Wagner and Paula Montoya defeated the No. 25 tandem of Yahsha Moore and Andreea Mitrache at No. 1 doubles, 8-5. In the No. 2 doubles flight, Laura Kemkes and Pauline Helgesson took down Alex Poissant and Anne Li Brande, 8-2, while the third slot team of Maria Benkirane and Adrianna Daszkiewicz took down Julia Kamenko and Jessica Kruczek, 8-5.
In singles play, Coralie Pesenti was defeated by Moore in the No. 1 position, 3-6, 6-0, 10-4, marking the Lions' only loss of the day. The Lions swept singles in two through six, with Kemkes earning a 6-1, 6-0 win over Mitrache at No. 2, and Benkirane defeating Poissant, 6-0, 6-0 at No. 3.
Helgesson earned a 6-2, 6-3 win over Briand at the No. 4 spot, while Montoya took down Kamenko, 6-3, 6-1, and Daszkiewicz defeated Lauren Hughes at No. 6, 6-2, 6-0.
The Saint Leo women's tennis team returns to action on Saturday, March 8, when they host the University of West Florida. Match time against the Argonauts is set for 11 a.m. at the Saint Leo Tennis Center.
