WINTER PARK, Fla. – The seventh-ranked Saint Leo women's tennis managed to pick up a critical Sunshine State Conference victory as the Lions defeated No. 12 Rollins College 5-4 in action from Rollins on Friday afternoon.
In claiming the conference win the Lions (13-2) picked up wins at Nos. 1 and 3 doubles to managed a 2-1 lead over the Tars (12-3) as Pauline Helgesson and Maria Benkirane managed an 8-4 win at the top doubles spot. Adrianna Daszkiewicz and Coralie Pesenti 8-5 victory at No. 3 meant the Lions took a 2-1 advantage into solo play.
Rollins would rally to tie the score at four as they picked up wins at Nos. 1, 5 and 6 and Saint Leo earned victories with Helgesson and Benkirane as the entire match would come down to Daszkiewicz at No. 4 singles.
Daszkiewicz would fall in the first set to Mariana Salvador, 6-4 but rallied in the second set 7-6, winning in the tiebreak 7-1 to send the flight, and the entire match to the deciding set. Outlasting her opponent, the junior dominated the third set 6-0 to give the set and match to the Green and Gold.
Rolling through the Tars, the Lions will return home and take on Nova Southeastern in conference action on Saturday afternoon. The SSC match between the Lions and Tars is scheduled to get underway at noon.
