No. 7 Lions Earn Impressive Top 25 Victory over No. 24 NYIT, 7-2

SAINT LEO, Fla. - The seventh-ranked Saint Leo women's tennis team passed another tough test as the Lions picked up a 7-2 non-conference victory over No. 24 NYIT on Saturday afternoon at the Saint Leo Tennis Center.

"The girls played excellent today," Head Coach James Bryce said. "That team (NYIT) has beaten a top-10 team this year and many other top-20 teams.  We executed when we needed to.  I am very happy with our performance."

Despite dropping the first two singles flights to their nationally-ranked opponents, the Lions (12-2) swept through the rest of the match with key wins coming at No. 1 doubles and No. 3 singles.

At No. 1 singles, the Lions' tandem of Pauline Helgesson and Maria Benkirane were tested to their limits, including being pushed into a tiebreak. The duo managed to claim the 9-8 win behind a thrilling 13-11 tiebreak to give the Lions a 3-0 lead heading into individual play.

Adrianna Daszkiewicz, playing at No. 3 singles, managed a 6-3 first-set win, but her opponent would test her in the second set, pushing Daszkiewicz to tiebreak. The Saint Leo junior managed to tough out a 7-1 tiebreak win to help seal up the match.

The victory keeps the Lions unblemished through March as they claimed their sixth consecutive match.

Saint Leo has little time to enjoy the top 25 victory as the Lions will be back in action at the Saint Leo Tennis Center on Sunday afternoon when they face West Virginia St.  The match is scheduled to get underway at noon.
