SAINT LEO, Fla. – In much the same way as their male counterparts did, the Saint Leo women's tennis team overcame a tough test as they bested visiting St. Thomas (Fla.) 9-0 in opening day action from the Saint Leo Tennis Center on Friday afternoon.
While looking to sweep St. Thomas (0-1), the Lions (1-0) saw both #1 Laura Kemkes and #2 Coralie Pesenti looked to persevere in tightly contested singles matches on their first day of competition. Despite the tough competition, and the adjusted lineup that head coach James Bryce was forced to play as a result of preseason injuries, Kemkes, Pesenti and the entire Lions' lineup managed to keep the perfect tally on the scoreboard.
"This was a good start for the ladies today," Bryce said. "Laura and Coralie both had to dig deep and play solid girls for the first match of the season. I was especially proud of the way Coralie fought for every point down the stretch. Overall we had a solid team performance and look forward to improving tomorrow."
The 'tomorrow' that Bryce speaks of is the Lions' next opponent in Southeastern University, in an 11:00 a.m. match between the teams.
