No.15 Women’s Tennis Topples Eckerd in Conference Finale, 9-0

ST PETERBURG, Fla. – The No.15-ranked Saint Leo women's tennis team (16-4, 5-3 SSC) posted its seventh-consecutive win as they shutout Sunshine State Conference competitor Eckerd College (3-13, 0-7 SSC), 9-0, Tuesday afternoon from the Turley Athletic Complex.

Posting five conference wins for the first time in program history, the Lions used the momentum of a 3-0 doubles sweep to catapult them to six consecutive singles victories.

Beginning with doubles, the Lions' No.8-ranked and top-flight tandem of Laura Kemkes and Emily Singleton ousted Amy Naula and Gipson Hawn, 8-0. Maria Benkirane and Selma Hidass registered the Lions second shutout of the day as they downed Katie Benn and Carson Trapp at No.3 doubles. Additionally, Jeanette McDonald and Adrianna Daszkiewicz completed the sweep as they defeated Taylor Bullock and Stephanie Jenks, 8-3, at No.2 doubles.

Kemkes, the Lions' No.13-ranked singles competitor, represented her national ranking strongly as she blanked Jenks, 6-0, 6-0, at top flight singles. The No.25-ranked Singleton clinched the match at the No.2 position as she defeated Hawn in straight-sets, 6-0, 6-1.

McDonald followed by sending away Naula with a 6-0, 6-2 loss, while Daszkiewicz earned a 6-2, 6-0 win at No.3 singles.

Phoebe Di Leo and Benkirane concluded the shutout win with identical 6-2, 6-1 wins.

The shutout is the Lions fourth of the season.

With both the men's and women's teams collecting dominating wins in their conference finale, head coach James Bryce details his thoughts. "I am really happy for both teams in their final SSC regular season match today," said Bryce. "The women clinched third place in the conference, and guys fourth. This is a great improvement for both teams, especially the women. However, we still have plenty of tennis to play in the coming weeks with Embry Riddle this weekend at home and the SSC Tournament next weekend. I am excited for us to continue excelling towards our end goals."

Saint Leo will conclude the 2012 regular season on Saturday, April 14, when they play host to Embry-Riddle. It is also senior day for the women as both Jeanette McDonald and Selma Hidass will be honored before the match. Doubles is set to begin at 1 p.m. from the Saint Leo Tennis Center.
