WINTER PARK, Fla. - Saint Leo sophomore Laura Kemkes has been recognized as Sunshine State Conference Women's Tennis Player of the Week, it was announced Monday by league officials.
Kemkes went a combined 4-0 in #1 singles and doubles play to lead the Lions to a 1-1 weekly record. Kemkes began the week by breezing past Thashia Garcia 6-1, 6-2 in Saint Leo's 9-0 sweep at Tampa. She joined Emily Singleton for an 8-3 doubles win over Meg Wladimirski and Megan Mancini. Kemkes then rose to the occasion in the unranked Lions' narrow 5-4 loss to No. 4 Barry. She upset No. 21 Cristina Valladares 6-7 (7-5), 7-5, 10-3 in a thriller in the top singles flight. She again partnered with Singleton in doubles, and the No. 12-ranked Lions duo upended Barry's No. 26 tandem of Valladares and Sarah Krohnen 8-3.
Kemkes is one of 21 Saint Leo student-athletes to be named SSC Player of the Week.
