Lions Down Tampa; Await Word on Regional Seeding
ALTAMONTE SPRINGS, Fla. – The Saint Leo women's tennis team (15-10) wrapped up the Sunshine State Conference Tournament with an impressive 5-0 shutout of rival the University of Tampa (5-15), Saturday afternoon from Sanlando Park.
In the seventh-place consolation match, the Lions made quick work of the Spartans in doubles before earning victories at No.1 and No.4 singles to clinch the match.
Again, it was the No.3 doubles pair ofJeanette McDonald and Adrianna Daszkiewicz giving Saint Leo the early lead as they blanked the duo of Briana Ryan and Kathleen Beckham, 8-0.
Bethania Laan and Laura Kemkesfollowed with an impressive 8-2 defeat of Leslie Raymond and Lauren Hewitt whileSelma Hidass and Caroline Ebner edged Megan Mancini and Nikol Williams, 9-7, in a thrilling back-and-forth struggle.
Possessing a 3-0 lead out of doubles, the Lions left no doubt in the victor as Laan wrapped-up a straight set 6-0, 6-2 win over Raymond.
At the No.4 slot, Hidass managed to put the finishing touches on the sweep as her 6-3, 6-0 win clinched the match.
The Lions will now await word from the NCAA in regards to their postseason hopes. Heading into the tournament, the Lions were ninth in the south region.
