Saint Leo, Fla. – The Saint Leo women’s tennis team (6-12) fell to Hillsborough Community College by the score of 8-1, Thursday afternoon from the Saint Leo Tennis Center.

The Lions dropped each of their doubles contests, but Tamara Bustard did register the Lions’ one win at No. 6 singles.

At the beginning of doubles, the trio of teams began to exchange points at a rapid pace, but it was the No. 3 team of Christine Clyne and Gina Schifano that took the show. The pair went back and forth with their south country opponents, pushing them to the brink on multiple occasions. Still, the HCC pair gathered enough energy at the end of the match to propel themselves to a 8-5 win.

Despite losing five-of-six singles matches, the bottom half of the lineup proved to be feisty in their efforts. In fact, Schifano took the first set from Pickerill at No. 5 singles. Unfortunately, the lead did not hold as Pickerill battled back to win set two and with the match in hand, rallied-off a 10-5 super tiebreaking clincher.

Bustard also played flawlessly and managed to catapult SLU to its one win. The New Port Richey, Fla. native blew past her opponent, Palinkas, 6-3 in the opening set and finished her off with a solid 6-4 win in the second set.

The Lions will return to action on Wednesday, April 7 for an SSC showdown with Rollins. First serve is set for 3:00 p.m. It will mark senior day, as both Schifano and Shaena Keefe will bid farewell to the Saint Leo Tennis Center.
