SAINT LEO, Fla. – The Saint Leo women’s tennis team (6-11, 1-5 SSC) took down the University of Tampa Spartans (2-14, 0-7 SSC) by the final score of 6-3, Wednesday afternoon from the Saint Leo Tennis Center in Sunshine State Conference action.
The Lions won 2-of-3 doubles contests, before overwhelming the Spartans in singles play, 4-to-2.

The Green & Gold took to the winner’s circle right from the beginning, as the No. 1 doubles duo of Jeanette McDonald and Shaena Keefe blew past the Tampa tandem of Kourtney Stark and Molloy Welsh, 8-3. Christine Clyne and Gina Schifano matched their teammates’ scores in an impressive performance at No. 3 doubles, winning 8-3.

The impressive doubles performances gave the team the momentum they needed heading into the singles play.

McDonald and Keefe wrapped-up notable, straight-set wins at No. 1 and No. 2 singles, as McDonald took down her opponent 6-1, 6-1 and Keefe was nearly stride-for-stride with her teammate, winning 6-3, 6-1.

Gina Schifano and Tamara Bustard also posted consecutive-set wins. After claiming the opening set 6-2, Schifano powered her way past Wooten to win 6-0, completing the sweep. The same could be said for Bustard at No. 6 singles as she overmatched Briana Ryan in the straight-sets 6-1, 6-3 win.

The SSC victory was the first conference win by Head Coach James Bryce, still with two conference matches remaining. In the win coach Bryce said, “I am proud of my girls. They rebounded well from our last meeting with Tampa. But we need to continue playing like this as we head into a crucial part of the season.”

The win avenged a tough 6-3 loss to the Spartans back in February.
The squad will return to the SLU Tennis Center on Thursday, April 1 for a 3:00 p.m. match with Hillsborough Community College.
