SAINT LEO, Fla. - The Saint Leo women’s tennis team (5-8) dropped a close match 5-4 to the Bentley University (1-2), Wednesday night from the SLU Tennis Complex. The loss snaps the Lions four-match winning streak.
The squad battled to gain one win in doubles play, before dropping three of six singles matches.
SLU picked up their first win of the day with an 8-1 victory at No. 1 doubles, as senior Sheana Keef and junior Jeanette McDonald overpowered the Hawks No. 1 pair, 8-1. The route was the Lions lone win in doubles.
The Lions also secured three singles wins as Keef, McDonald and Schifano provided the Lions points. At No.1 singles, McDonald started the winning by sweeping 6-3 and 6-1. Keef blanked Paula Satumayor in the first set 6-0 and closed out the victory with a 6-2 score in the second set.
Gina Schifano wasn’t only battling a cold, but a tough Falcons' opponent, as well. Schifano claimed a seven-point first set victory before be dropped 6-4 in set two. Schifano overcame the set back, however, as she torched her opponent for a deciding third set, 6-1 win.
Still, it was not enough as the team could not find wins at No. 5 or 6 singles.
Tamara Bustard gave the Lions the biggest effort of the night. The Lions No. 5 singles, Bustard dropped the first set 6-2 to rebound and win the second set 6-3. The third set took almost an hour of back and fourth scoring, but late,m unforced errors caused Bustard's lead to slip away. She eventually fell 7-6.
The Lions will return to action on Friday in Boca Raton, Fla. against SSC Lynn University, with the first serve set for 5 p.m.
