Boca Raton, Fla. – The Sunshine State Conference Tournament did not begin the way theNo.7 seeded Saint Leo women’s tennis squad (9-15) would have liked, dropping a 5-0 decision to No.18 ranked Florida Southern, Thursday afternoon from Patch Reef Park in Boca Raton, Fla.
After dropping their previous two decisions with the Mocs this season, the Lions did their best reverse their fortunes around against Florida Southern in the quarterfinals of the SSC Tournament. Unfortunately, their attempts were turned back for an eighth consecutive time.
In No. 1 doubles action, Lina Benkirane and Gina Schifano dropped a tough 8-4 decision to the No.23-ranked doubles team of Senka Softic and Ashley Hungerford 8-4. Soon after, Jeanette McDonald and Shaena Keefe fell in a back and forth match, eventually seeing the FSC pair pull away for an 8-5 win at No. 2 doubles.
Florida Southern continued their winning ways at No. 3 doubles, and then took the first two matches of singles at the No. 5 and No. 6 positions to solidify the win. The Lions other four singles matches did not finish because the match was already secured.
The loss drops the Lions into the backdraw and will now take on the No.6-seeded Florida Tech Panthers Friday, April 17 from Patch Reef Park. First serve is set for 3:00 pm.
