SAINT LEO, Fla. – The Saint Leo University women’s tennis team (8-11) put a halt to their three-match losing streak, defeating St. Olaf College 6-3, Wednesday evening from the SLU Tennis Center. After taking two of three matches in doubles action, the squad finished up their impressive performance by taking four of six matches in singles play.
Lina Benkirane and Gina Schifano got the Lions off on the right foot putting their opponents down a 9-7 in a No. 1 doubles thriller. The exciting win provided a spark for SLU’s No. 2 doubles team of Jeanette McDonald and Shaena Keefe as they wasted no time in defeating the tandem of Caitlin Harper and Aimee Ny 8-2.
Up 2-to-1 heading into singles, Benkirane once again provided the offensive spark for SLU, as she posted the Lions third point of the day defeating Abby Ho in straight sets, 6-4, 6-1. Keefe then followed with an outstanding two-set win over opponent 6-0, 6-2. In what proved to be the deciding match, McDonald took down Caitlin Harper in a back and forth match at No. 3 singles, 6-3, 6-4. Schinafano added the Green and Gold’s sixth and final point of the contest by outlasting Christine Muller 6-3, 6-4.
