SAINT LEO, Fla. – The Saint Leo University women’s tennis team (3-8) appears to getting hot at the right time as they won their second consecutive match Wednesday evening, defeting the St. Joseph’s College Pumas 8-1 from the SLU Tennis Center.
The Pumas had a hard time hanging with Saint Leo in the early stages, as the Lions opened up the match with a sweep of doubles action.
Lions No. 1 doubles team of Lina Benkirane and Lara King handled the duo of Busch and Gohil 8-2. The momentum carried over to the center court where the No. 2 tandem of Jeanette McDonald and Shaena Keefe blew past their opponents 8-0. The results wasn’t much different in the No. 3 doubles position, as the combination of Gina Schifano and Taylor Cleaves took down Burgeson and Conline 8-1.
On the singles side, Benkirane was tenacious as she refused to let her opponent have any chance, putting her away in straight sets 6-0, 6-1. Keefe was just as dominant in her straight sets decision winning 6-2, 6-0. McDonald and Schifano only allowed one point during their two matches as both won their matches convincingly. Cleaves once again anchored the back end of the lineup, winning 6-1, 6-0 the put the final touches on the Lions 8-1 win.
Saint Leo will join their men’s counterparts, as they take on St. Thomas University from the SLU Tennis Center on Thursday, March 5. First serve is set for 3:00 pm.
