SAINT LEO, Fla. – The Saint Leo women’s tennis team (0-6) continued to make improvements on Saturday from the SLU Tennis Center, but their efforts weren’t enough as they dropped their non-conference match to Nova Southeastern, 9-0.
Doubles action took center stage first, but not one of the three matches went the Lions’ way. The No. 1 pair of Lina Benkirane and Jeanette McDonald provided SLU with their best chance at victory but the duo could not come up with the critical points in the match as they fell 6-8 to Ulia Talalenko and Justine Feaster.
Down 3-0, the Lions took to singles play but a positive result was hard to come by. No. 1 player Benkirane and No. 5 Taylor Cleaves each gave Saint Leo a shot a victory but ultimately NSU pulled out the two match victories.
Benkirane fought hard in her first set but fell 6-4 before dropping set the second set, 6-1. Cleaves on the other hand dropped her first set by the same score of 6-4, but bounced back in the second set to tie it up at five points apiece. Unfortunately for Cleaves and the rest of the Lions, Elisa Leeder pulled away at the end scoring the final two points to win the match 7-5.
The Lions now much get ready to take on SSC rival the University of Tampa in non-conference action, Tuesday, February 24 from the SLU Tennis Center.
