Saint Leo, Fla. (March 23, 2008) – The No. 29 Saint Leo women’s tennis team (6-5) edged Colgate University 5-4 Thursday afternoon at the SLU Tennis Center.
The Lions won two out of three doubles matches to begin the afternoon. The only loss resulted from a 9-8 (10-8) defeat in the No. 1 position, as Lina Benkirane (So., Casablanca, Morocco) and Asmaa Tazi (Jr., Casablanca, Morocco) fell to the Red Raiders combo of Elise DeRose and Sam Inacker. The Lions No. 2 doubles position bounced right back giving Saint Leo its first point of the afternoon, as Shaena Keefe (So., Spring Hill, Fla.) and Taylor Cleaves (So., Norwell, Mass.) defeated Cameron Williams and Steph Bender 8-5. In the No. 3 doubles position, Veronica Queen (Fr., Valrico, Fla.) and Gina Schifano (So., Tampa, Fla.) triumphed over the Red Raiders tandem of Jackie Stimmel and Isabel Riemer 8-5.
The Lions picked up three additional points in singles action. In No. 1 singles, Benkirane won a hard fought victory over the Red Raiders’ DeRose in three-sets 6-4, 4-6, 6-2. Tazi followed that up for the Lions with a two-set victory over Inacker 6-4, 7-6 (7-2) in the No. 2 singles position. The Lions Keefe dropped a three-setter to Riemer 7-5, 2-6, 6-4 in the No. 3 position. The Lions rallied back in the No. 4 singles spot, as Queen defeated Williams in a three-set thriller 2-6, 6-3, 7-5 to lock up the victory for Saint Leo. The Lions fell in their final two matches as Stimmel defeated Schifano 6-1, 6-2 and Bender secured a Red Raider point by defeating Cleaves 6-0, 6-2.
