Garriock claims 100 Fly title at SSC Swim Championship

ORLANDO, Fla. – Saint Leo junior Natalia Garriock won the 100 Butterfly and claimed the Lions' first event title, to highlight Friday's second day of competition at the 2017 Sunshine State Conference Swimming Championships at the Orlando YMCA Aquatic Center.

Garriock posted an NCAA "B" qualifying standard time of 54.71 seconds in the 100 Fly, besting Tampa's Mckenzie Street by .35 seconds.

Freshman Annie Lindstrom finished third in the 100 Fly with a time of 55.53, to give the Saint Leo women two of the three podium spots in the event.

In the finals of the 400 Individual Medley, sophomore Sidney Martin finished eighth with a time of 4:35.53.

Junior Hunter Bains touched the wall in fourth place in the 200 Free with a time of 1:38.28, while freshman Luka Vulic was eighth in a time of 1:39.71.

Both the Saint Leo men's and women's teams in the 400 Medley Relay posted a third-place finish. In the women's race, the team of sophomore Maftuna Tuhtasinova, senior Nicole Weber, Lindstrom, and Garriock posted a time of 3:48.56. The men's team of junior Milosz Mikicin, freshman Henrik Dahrendorff, Bains, and Vulic recorded a third-place time of 3:17.46, with Mikicin's time of 49.01 in the opening 100 Back hitting the NCAA "B" standard.

In Friday afternoon's preliminaries, Weber, freshman Charlie Langner, and freshman Siobhan Murphy all earned their way into the 400 IM consolation race. Weber finished ninth (4:31.63), with Murphy placing 12th (4:36.99) and Langner 14th (4:40.76).

Freshman Mattie Shaver earned her way into the consolation race of the 200 Free, where she placed 14th with a time of 1:56.97.  

After two days of competition at the 2017 SSC Swimming Championships, Saint Leo women's swimming is fourth with 242 points. The Lions trail third-place Florida Southern by 45 points. On the men's side, Saint Leo is fifth with 143 points.

Competition continues on Saturday with the 500 Freestyle, 100 Backstroke, 100 Breaststroke, 200 Butterfly, and the 800 Free Relay.
