Late surge lifts No. 10 women’s soccer over Sharks in title game

SAINT LEO, Fla. – No. 10 Saint Leo women's soccer found a late second-half surge to power their way to the 2016 Sunshine State Conference tournament title after defeating No. 20 Nova Southeastern 2-1in a comeback fashion on Sunday afternoon at University Soccer Field.

"It was excellent to see our girls come out there and battle back from being down with 10 minutes to play against a talented Nova team," Head Coach Ged O'Connor stated after the win on Sunday. "It was a great effort and to be able to do this for the first time in program history (win both the regular season and tournament championship in the same season) is an incredible feeling."

Genevieve Gignac and Victoria Covas each scored to lift the Lions over the Sharks in the second half of the SSC Championship game.

Selena Jaimes and Katie Waddell were credited with an assist apiece in the win where Megan Charlton picked up her eighth win of the year in goal, recording five saves in the game.

Following the game, Arielle Kabangu, Selena Jaimes, Katie Waddell, Genevieve Gignac, Natalie Melillo and Megan Charlton were selected to the SSC All-Tournament team.

  • #10 Saint Leo improves to 13-3-1 on the year after the win, and picked up their second SSC trophy of the season, a week after winning the regular season on home field.
  • This is the first time in program history the women's soccer team was crowned the SSC Regular Season Champions and the SSC Tournament Champions. 
  • Genevieve Gignac scored her sixth goal of the season to bring her season points total to 14.
  • Victoria Covas scored her second goal of the year and hit her first game-winner of her career.
  • Selena Jaimes tallied her fourth assist of the year where Katie Waddell picked up her eighth.
  • Megan Charlton moves to 8-2-1 in goal for the season after recording five saves on 14 shots from the Sharks.
  • The Lions tallied nine shots with three on goal and two goals. Saint Leo was awarded six corner kicks throughout the contest.

For the Opponent – Nova Southeastern

  • #20 Nova Southeastern falls to 12-3-3 after the 2-1 loss.
  • The Sharks had the 1-0 lead after a 64th-minute goal by Nichole Poppe.
  • Keeper Ida Norstrom notched one save on nine Saint Leo shots.
  • The Sharks ripped off 14 shots during the game with two corners.
