Women’s soccer overthrows  #9 Sharks for the SSC top spot

SAINT LEO, Fla. – Saint Leo women's soccer defeated No. 9 Nova Southeastern 2-0 on Tuesday, Oct. 25 at University Soccer Field to move into first place in the Sunshine State Conference. The Lions improved to 10-3-1, 6-1-1 SSC after the victory over the Sharks.

Saint Leo earned their second clean sheet of the season with a 2-0 win over Nova Southeastern. The Lions used two second half goals to seal the win. Genevieve Gignac put away the first ball on a tap to the opposite corner after Natalie Melillo crossed the ball through the box.

Arielle Kabangu scored her 14th goal of the season to seal the win for the Lions. Keeper Megan Charlton recorded two key saves in the final five minutes of the game to keep the clean sheet. Charlton recorded five saves on five shots on goal from the Sharks.

How It Happened
Genevieve Gignac scored on a redirect tap-in after a ball from the foot of Natalie Melillo came in from the right side of the field. Gignac was pushed from behind with no call from the referee and found a way to put in the back of the net with her toe. | SLU 1-0 |

Points to Note

  • Saint Leo improves to 10-3-1, 6-1-1 SSC after defeating #9 Nova Southeastern 2-0, and moved to the top of the SSC standings with 19 points and one game to go.
  • Arielle Kabangu notched her 14th goal of the season to move to 32 points on the season.
  • Genevieve Gignac scored her fourth goal of the season in and got credited with the game-winner after putting the Lions up 1-0 in the 48th minute.
  • Keeper Megan Charlton picked up her fifth win of the year to move to 5-2-1 after the full 90 minutes in goal. Charlton tallied two key saves in the final five minutes of the game.
  • The Lions move to first in the SSC with 19 points on a 6-1-1 record. Saint Leo has one game remaining on Oct. 30th against Palm Beach Atlantic.

  • Nova Southeastern falls to 10-2-3, 5-1-2 SSC after the 2-0 setback to the Lions.
  • The Sharks outshot the Lions 15-14 on the night while committing 11 fouls to Saint Leo's eight.
  • Goalie Ida Norstrom suffered the loss in goal and moves to 7-2-3.

Saint Leo hosts Palm Beach Atlantic for Senior Day on Sunday, Oct. 30 at 1 p.m. at University Soccer Field in the final regular season game on the 2016 campaign.
