Women’s Soccer draws a tie with Tampa Wednesday

SAINT LEO, Fla. – Despite drawing a tie with Tampa at home Wednesday night, Saint Leo's women's soccer team saw Cassidy Place score her first career goal in the sixth minute of the game. The Lions and Spartans tied 1-1 at University Soccer Field after 110:00 minutes of action.

Place, a 5-10 redshirt sophomore from Land O'Lakes, Fla., watched a ball come in from the corner as she jumped and headed it past the Spartans' keeper for the first goal of the game. Natalie Melillo took the corner and placed the ball into the middle of the box, finding Place. Melillo picked up her eighth assist of the night and moved into second on the team in total point on the year with 16.

The Lions were outshot 17-10 and had two fewer corners on the night where they committed one more foul that the Spartans, 6-5. Both goals scored Wednesday night were off of corner set pieces.

In the overtime periods, Tampa ripped off six total shots to Saint Leo's four. The Spartans had four shots in the first overtime period with two in the second. The Lions tallied two shots in each period of extra time.

  • Playing ahead for the second time this season, the Lions saw Cassidy Place score her first career goal in the sixth minute.
