Women's soccer defeats West Alabama Friday night

SAINT LEO, Fla. – Saint Leo defeated West Alabama on Friday, Sept. 9, 2-1 to move to 1-1 on the season behind goals from Arielle Kabangu and Genevieve Gignac.

The Lions, who fired off 17 total shots Friday night, found the back of the net twice in the first half from Kabangu and Gignac. Kabangu and Gignac each had four shots, where Gignac recorded three on frame.

West Alabama cut the lead in the second half with a goal by Nina Coleman after a ball bounced around in the box from a corner kick.

| Kabangu put the Lions on top once again with a goal in the 27th minute after the ball came bouncing in from a set piece and blasting it to the top of the goal about a yard out. |SLU 1-0|
37'| Gignac got in the scoring column after Natalie Melillo crossed a ball in finding the head of Gignac around the six-yard box. Melillo whipped the ball across the goal where the streaking Gignac and Katie Waddell were coming down the middle of the field. Points to Note

  • Saint Leo moves to 1-1-0 after defeating West Alabama 2-1 under the Friday night lights.
  • The Lions outshot the Tigers 17-11 with 10-5 in the first half.
  • Arielle Kabangu found the back of the net for her second goal of the season where Genevieve Gignac started her scoring with her head.
  • Megan Charlton picked up the win in between the posts for the Lions to move to 1-1 on the young season. Charlton recorded seven saves in 90 minutes of action.

For the Opponent – West Alabama

  • Nina Coleman opened her scoring season with a goal in the 68th minute to cut the lead to one goal. This was the defender's first goal of the season and sixth of her career.
  • Keeper Issy Foster took her first loss of the season going to 2-1 on the year but tallied seven save on the season.
