Long Goal Gives Lions First Conference Victory

SAINT LEO, Fla.- The Saint Leo women's soccer team picked up its first Sunshine State Conference victory with a 1-0 win over visiting Lynn University Wednesday night at University Field and improve to a record of 6-3, 1-0 in conference play.

An outstanding 45 yard shot from freshman Selena Jaimes soared into the net off the cross bar from a free kick. This goal came for the Lions' in the 25th minute notching the only goal in the contest. As the shot category was evenly matched in the first half, the Lions' goaltender Abby Evans earned a clean sheet and added two saves with help from the defense.

The Fighting Knights (2-5-2, 0-1 SSC) entered the second half immediately creating opportunities and were quickly denied by the Lions' senior leadership efforts. As both teams had three shots on goal, the Lions' defense took stride as they made a critical team save when Evans was caught away from goal.

Lynn's goalie Katie Nimitz had her first start in net for the Fighting Knights yielding only one goal facing six shots.

The Lions will continue action as they travel to Nova Southeastern on Saturday to face the Sharks in Saint Leo's second SSC matchup of 2013.
