Women's Soccer Ends Season with 4-0 Loss to Tampa
TAMPA, Fla. – The Saint Leo women's soccer team (2-12-2) fell to the University of Tampa Spartans (11-3-3) in the Lions' last game of the season Saturday night from Tampa, Fla. The final score was 4-0.
The Spartans struck first in the match, with the first goal coming in the 21st minute from Cici Gonzalez, who sent a header past the hands of Saint Leo goalkeeper Abby Evans on a corner kick assist from Courtney Peffley.
In the second half, the Spartans offense pressed harder, scoring three more goals within 14 minutes of each other. Just three minutes into the second half, Tampa's Amber Pennybaker placed a shot into the back of the net to put the Spartans ahead, 2-0.
In the 60th minute, Tampa's Lauren Moore scored on an unassisted play to notch her 15th goal of the season. Less than 45 seconds later, Cici Gonzalez sent a pass to teammate Taylor Wade, who found the back of the net to tally her first goal of the year.
Although the Lions were unable to put themselves on the board in the non-conference contest, goalkeepers Abby Evans and Jessica Griffith combined for six saves in the match.
Saint Leo's loss to the University of Tampa concludes the 2012-13 season for the Lions. They will return to the field during the spring months to participate in off-season practices, games, and more.
