Women's Soccer Falls to Barry in 2-1 Conference Loss
SAINT LEO, Fla. – In their second conference game of the season, the Saint Leo University women's soccer team (2-4) lost to the Barry University Buccaneers (3-1) Saturday afternoon from Saint Leo University field by a score of 2-1.
Despite being outshot 14-4 in the first half, the Lions kept the Buccaneers scoreless for the first 44 minutes. However, strong offensive play by Barry in the first half forced the Lions to play continuous defense.
The first goal of the game came with less than a minute left to go before halftime, when Barry forward Kayla Hodge made a shot that rebounded off of Saint Leo goalkeeper Abby Evans and gave Barry's Morgan Garcia the opportunity to score.
After halftime, Saint Leo's Shanelle Edwards made a strong charge to the goal and the Lions' benefited from an own goal after the ball ricocheted off of a Barry defender and into the back of the net.
Barry continued to keep pushing, however, when they took the lead back with 11 minutes left in the game as forward Emma Karp assisted to Lauren Manna, who connected with the ball and sent a shot past the diving Evans.
Despite the final outcome, Evans shined in the net for the Lions, collecting 12 saves and marking her third consecutive double-digit save performance.
The Lions will return to the field on Wednesday, September 19th when they take on their conference rival, the University of Tampa. Kickoff is slated for 5 p.m. from Saint Leo University field.
