Lions Post-Season Run Cut Short by Fighting Knights

SAINT LEO, Fla. – Saint Leo senior defender Francesca Williams ripped a shot between the posts in the 88th minute, but the Lions weren't able to overcome a two goal deficit as Lynn University cut SLU's post-season run short on Sunday afternoon.  The fifth-seeded Fighting Knights upset top-seed Saint Leo 2-1 to advance to the Third Round of the NCAA DII Women's Soccer Tournament and South Region Finals.

Saint Leo concludes their epic season with a mark of 15-3-1, a Sunshine State Conference regular season championship title, and the program's fifth NCAA Tournament appearance.  The Fighting Knights advance to an overall mark of 11-6-1 on the season

The Green and Gold found themselves down early in the game after Lynn's Carolyn Hartman connected a ball to Melissa Ortiz.  Ortiz broke free of her defender and took on SLU goalkeeper Laura Carstens one-on-one for the first goal of the game, scoring in the 10th minute.

The Fighting Knights extended their lead to two with a goal in the 84th minute thanks to another shot from Ortiz.  LU's Kirstie Schultz hammered a hard shot off the post, which deflected its way to the feet of Ortiz.  Kelcee Mai, who was between the posts for the Lions in the final minutes of the contest, was caught off her mark from the previous shot, leaving Ortiz with an open look on frame for the game winner.

Williams fired her shot between the posts four minutes later in a late flurry of action, turning up the intensity and igniting the Lions in the waning moments, but Saint Leo was unable to come away with the equalizer.

The Lions led the shot count 14-10, with both teams posting five shots on target.  Carstens collected three saves while her counterpart for the Fighting Knights, Meghan Dolan, set aside three of her own with the team earning credit for an additional save.  The Green and Gold had 11 opportunities from the corner, with Lynn only finding the corner flag five times.
