WINTER PARK, Fla. - Saint Leo freshman goalkeeper Laura Carstens has been named Sunshine State Conference Defensive Player of the Week for the period ending October 30, league officials announced, Monday. This marks the third time this season Carstens has earned Player of the Week honors.
Facing the SSC's second-ranked offense, Carstens posted a 1-0 shutout at No. 24 Tampa to lift the No. 6 Lions to their first SSC regular-season title in program history. The Horsens, Denmark native made five saves to preserve the victory. She permitted only two goals in eight SSC matches this fall.
Carstens, and the sixth-ranked Saint Leo women's soccer team, have a bye in the first round of the SSC Tournament thanks to their regular season championship. The Lions return to action on Friday, November 4, when they take on the winner of the Lynn/Tampa matchup which will take place on Tuesday, November 1.
