No. 6 Saint Leo Captures 1-0 Victory over Lynn
SAINT LEO, Fla. – The sixth-ranked Saint Leo University women's soccer team held a resilient Lynn squad scoreless and earned a 1-0 Sunshine State Conference victory over the Fighting Knights on Sunday afternoon at University Field.
Saint Leo keeps their unbeaten streak alive, advancing to an overall mark of 10-0, and 3-0 in SSC play, while the Fighting Knights drop to 6-2-1, and 1-1-0 in conference action.
Squaring off against the Fighting Knights for the second time in 15 days, the Lions hunkered down and earned their third clean sheet of the season thanks to a steadfast defensive unit that held Lynn to just nine shots and four shots on target.
Laura Carstens had another big day between the posts, making four key saves and denying the Fighting Knights a victory for the second time this season thanks to smart play and solid direction. Her counterpart, Meghan Dolan, saw a total of 16 shots, seven of which were on frame, and made six saves while allowing one goal.
After a stalemate for the first 44 minutes of play, the Lions were finally able to break through and put a goal on the scoreboard. Cassie Barbaresi flicked the ball past Dolan from the right edge of the box, finding Jaime Smith in the middle for a solid shot directly on target. Smith's tally came with 52 seconds before the break, and allowed the Lions to enter into the half with a slim advantage.
The second stanza was another standoff. The Lions rattled off seven shots to Lynn's six in the final period, but neither team was able to capitalize on any of their offensive opportunities in the final 45 minutes of play.
The Saint Leo women's soccer team returns to action on Tuesday, October 4, when they travel to Nova Southeastern University. Kickoff against the Sharks is set for 5 p.m. For the latest news, updates, and information on the Lions, visit SaintLeoLions.com.
