WINTER PARK, Fla. - Saint Leo goalkeeper Laura Carstens has been named Sunshine State Conference Defensive Player of the Week, for the period ending September 25, 2011.
Carstens had an unbelievable week for Saint Leo, posting a 2-0 record and a 0.00 goals-against-average. In addition, the Horsens, Denmark native registered five saves in a pair of south region wins, including an upset of the nation's top team, Florida Tech.
In two starts, the 'keeper posted one shutout and totaled 158 minutes in net.
In her first match of the week, the freshman faced her toughest challenge of the season in top-ranked Florida Tech. Five outstanding Carstens' saves kept the Lions in contention until a Dari Alcantara header gave the Lions a 1-0 advantage, a lead Carstens helped preserve. In total, she faced 13 shots in 90 minutes of action en route to her first shutout of the season.
She kept the Lions unbeaten in her final start of the week. Playing 69 minutes, Carstens and the Lions defensive unit allowed only one shot as Saint Leo took out Alabama-Huntsville, 3-1. e the Lions a 1-0 advantage, a lead Carstens helped preserve. In total, she faced 13 shots in 90 minutes of action en route to her first shutout of the season.
Carstens and the rest of the women's soccer team continue their 2011 campaign on Thursday, September 29, when they travel to St. Petersburg, Fla. to take on Eckerd College.
