SAINT LEO, Fla. – The No. 20 Saint Leo women's soccer team kept their clean sheet intact as they defeated Alabama-Huntsville 3-1 on Sunday afternoon at University Field. The Lions advance to an overall mark of 8-0, while the Chargers drop to a record of 2-6.
The Green and Gold earned their eighth-straight victory thanks to a goal from Stephanie Marran in the 41st minute off of assists from Francesca Williams and Andrea Lott. Williams sent a through ball up to Lott, who set up the shot for Marran into the lower right corner.
Ashley Acco put the Lions up on the scoreboard in the 15th minute of play thanks to an assist from Sherrie Gessin. Marran earned her tally late in the first period, giving the Lions a 2-0 advantage at the half.
The second stanza scoring opened with a goal from Alicia Schuering on an assist from Karin Hedlund in the 62nd minute, pulling Saint Leo out to a 3-0 lead. A foul called on the Lions in the 84th minute of play set the Chargers up with a free kick just outside of the box. UAH senior Luting Sun sent a free kick over the hands of goalkeeper Jessica Griffith for the Chargers' lone goal of the game.
Laura Carstens saw a total of 69 minutes between the posts for the Lions, seeing a total of one shot which was not on target. Griffith closed out the second period, seeing four shots and making a save while allowing one shot hit the net.
For UAH, Iris Gunnarsdottir, made 10 saves on 24 shots, with the Chargers picking up team save in the 81st minute.
The Lions led the shot count 24-5, as well as the corner-kick tally 5-3. Alabama-Huntsville earned 11 saves to SLU's one, and committed 15 fouls to the Green and Gold's eight.
