SAINT LEO, Fla. – Men’s soccer player Erik Mozzo and women’s soccer player Pia Soesemann were named Sunshine State Conference Players of the Week; it was announced Monday by SSC Commissioner Jay Jones.

Erik Mozzo turned in a stellar week for the Green & Gold, posting a 2-0 overall record and 0.54 GAA, all while compiling nine saves. In their 4-1 victory over Thomas University, the Beaufort, S.C. native played 75 minutes and did not surrender a goal. The freshman collected four saves on nine shots taken.

Mozzo saved his best performance for last as his five-save effort against No. 14 Lynn University, helped lead to a 2-1 SSC upset over the nationally ranked Fighting Knights team. The SLU stopper played in all 90 minutes and allowed only one goal to the mighty Fighting Knights’ offense. The upset granted the Lions their first Sunshine State Conference victory for the season. This is the second SSC Defensive Player of the Week nod for Mozzo this season.

On the women’s side, Pia Soesemann claimed the SSC Offensive Player of the Week award. Soesemann had an outstanding week for the Lions. Like her men’s counterpart Mozzo, she also helped lead her squad to a 2-0 record for the week, including regional victories over Palm Beach Atlantic and Lynn University. She concluded the week with three goals in 115 minutes played

Against the Sailfish, Soesemann was responsible for the eventual game-winning goal in the 25th minute, scoring on a breakaway en route to a 7-2 win.

Three days later, Soesemann had a special performance in store for their SSC defeat of the Lynn University Fighting Knights. After being injured early in the first half, Soesemann came out reenergized for the second period. The pesky forward pushed the offensive issue for the remainder of the game, eventually breaking free for the go-ahead goal in the 81st minute. The goal marked her second game-winning goal in as many games. She solidified the 4-2 win five minutes later with a goal in the 86th, putting the game away.

The award marks the first Player of the Week award for the women’s squad this season.

Mozzo and Soesemann are the seventh and eight Saint Leo student athletes to be named SSC Players of the Week for the 2009-10 athletic year. For the week, Saint Leo athletics went 6-0 overall.

Mozzo and the rest of the Men’s soccer team returns to the field on Wednesday, October 14 for a home SSC showdown with Florida Southern. Kickoff is slated for 7:00 p.m. The women head to Miami Shores Tuesday afternoon for a critical SSC clash with the Barry Buccaneers. Kick off for the contest is set for 7:00 p.m.
