WINTER PARK, Fla. – The Saint Leo University women’s soccer team (14-4, 5-3 SSC) fell in their regular season finale at the hands of the eighth-ranked Rollins College Tars (14-0-3, 7-0-1 SSC) 1-0, at Cahall-Sandspur Field Sunday evening.
Rollins won the SSC Championship in shut out fashion as the Tars' win over SLU hurdles them over Florida Southern to finish at the top of the conference in the regular season. The Lions, who are 5-3 in conference, finish in fourth place.
Rollins put the pressure on the Lions’ defense from the onset. In the 17th minute the Tars struck, as Rollins rushed the box taking two shots at Lions’ ‘keeper Lauren Hudson. The first shot had Hudson making a point-blank save, but the attempted clearance by the Lions' Kiki Day was redirected off a Rollins' forward and over the head of Hudson for the first, and only goal of the match.
Just minutes later, the Lions turned the pressure around on the Tars as Ana Davilla sent a shot just wide of the far post. The Lions had two shots on goal in the half, but nearly put both into the back of the net. Despite the two near-misses, the Lions entered halftime down 1-0.
SLU owned the first 15 minutes of the second half, with the pressure again almost resulting in a goal. Hannah Beard ripped a shot inside the box, but the Rollins ‘keeper made a diving save to her left keeping the Lions off the board. Saint Leo played very aggressive soccer as the attacked numerous times throughout the remainer, but could not equalize the match before the clock struck zero.
The Lions posted 12 total shots, while the home squad had 15.
The Tars sent 10 corner kicks towards Hudson, while the Lions had two. Each team committed five fouls in the contest.
The Lions return to the field Tuesday, November 4, as they host the quarterfinals of the SSC Tournament. Saint Leo, who is seeded fourth in the tournament, will welcome fifth-seed Lynn University to University Field. Kickoff scheduled for 4:30 pm and will be broadcasted live on the Saint Leo Lions AudioCast Network.
