MELBOURNE, Fla. – Saint Leo University women’s soccer junior Hannah Beard broke a scoreless tie in the 93rd minute as the Lions defeated Florida Tech 1-0 in overtime in Sunshine State Conference action from Rick Stottler Field on Saturday afternoon. With the win, the Lions improve to 7-2 overall and 1-1 in the SSC while Florida Tech, ranked 19th in the nation, falls to 9-2 overall and 1-1 in conference.
Both teams had their fair share of opportunities to spin the scoreboard during regulation, but it wasn’t until nearly four minutes into the first extra period that Saint Leo received their gift.
A ball that rolled past the touch-line was tossed back into play by junior Sara Macko. Instead of Macko picking the easy target in Pia Sosemann, who was wide open in the middle of the field, she flipped the ball to Beard, who was guarded by two Panther defenders. Beard spun past one player, and dribbled past the second, all while keeping control of the ball. As she approached the corner of the 18-yard area she was greeted by a quickly advancing FIT ‘keeper. At the precise moment, Beard lofted the ball above her outstretched arms and dropped in inside the far post, giving the Lions the win.
Senior Lauren Hudson in goal, and defenders Lizzie Seedhouse and Francesca Williams anchored a solid defensive line that only allowed six total shot, four being on goal. The Lions out-shot the hosts 11-to-6 and posted a 9-to-1 advantage in corner kicks.
Saint Leo will take one day to rest before loading the bus again on Monday as they travel to Miami where they will face NAIA foe St. Thomas University. Kick-off is scheduled for 1:00 p.m. in South Florida.
