Saint Leo, Fla. (August 13, 2008) – The Saint Leo women’s soccer team was selected to finish third in the SSC; it was announced Wednesday by Conference Commissioner Michael J. Marcil. The Lions racked up 41 total points and one first-place vote, but were edged by Nova Southeastern University by a lone point for second place. Defending national champion, the University of Tampa, was selected as the preseason favorite to win the 2008 Sunshine State Conference women's soccer championship.

The Lions closed the 2007 season with a school record 15-5 mark and finished second in the conference with a 6-2 record,  one point behind first-place Tampa and an SSC crown. Ged O'Connor enters his third season as the Lions’ head coach and returns thirteen players from last seasons squad, including nine starters. The coaching staff was also on the recruiting trail early bringing in ten fresh faces for the upcoming season, including eight freshmen and two sophomore transfers.

Saint Leo opens its 2008 season August 28 at home against Clearwater Christian College, kickoff is scheduled for 5:00 p.m. The Lions Sunshine State Conference schedule will begin at home Tuesday, September 23 against rival Tampa at 7:00 p.m.

Rollins placed fourth in the poll, garnering 56 points. Florida Southern appeared at No. 5, tallying 65 points, while Florida Tech was tabbed sixth with 96 points.

Lynn (100), Barry (103), and Eckerd (127) rounded out the preseason poll.

Voting for the preseason poll was conducted among the league's women's soccer coaches and sports information directors.
