Saint Leo, Fla. (November 11, 2007) – A 108th minute penalty kick by Montevallo midfielder Stacey Balaam sent the No. 6 seed Falcons (15-7) into the Third Round of the NCAA Division II Women’s Soccer Championships with a 2-1 come-from-behind double-overtime victory over No. 2 seed Saint Leo University (15-5) on Sunday at University Field in Saint Leo, Fla.
Balaam had set up the equalizer in the 89th minute when her free kick was hit on the half volley by Kami Kapaku. The drive hit the underside of the crossbar and ricocheted off of Saint Leo goalkeeper Lauren Hudson (Jr., Odessa, Fla.) to bring the teams level and force extra-time.
Saint Leo had opened the scoring in the seventh minute when an effort from Dari Alcantara (Fr., Tampa, Fla.) was saved by Montevallo ‘keeper Cory Gros. The goalkeeper was unable to hold the drive and the rebound bounced kindly for Jennifer O’Connor (Sr., Fernandina Beach, Fla.) who connected with a diving header and gave the Lions a 1-0 lead early on.
After Kapaku forced extra time with her team-leading 17th goal of the season, the Lions nearly snatched victory in the closing seconds of the first overtime period. However, an effort from midfielder Sara Macko (So., Valrico, Fla.) went over the bar and the teams went into double-overtime.
It was again Kapaku who caused the problems for the Lion defense in the second overtime, as her driving run forced a foul in the area and resulted in the penalty. The spot kick was coolly converted by Balaam for her 13th goal of the season and fourth game-winner.
Montevallo will now move on to the Third Round of the NCAA Division II Women’s Soccer Championships and will play the top-seed University of Tampa Spartans (Date and Time TBA). The Spartans defeated Ouachita Baptist University 1-0 on Sunday in their Second Round match at UT’s Pepin Stadium.
