Saint Leo, Fla. (September 22, 2007) – Hannah Beard (So., Liverpool, England) scored both Saint Leo goals, including the game-winner in the 99th minute to lead the 23rd ranked women’s soccer team (6-2, 2-1 SSC) to a 2-1 come-from-behind victory over Rollins College (5-4, 1-1 SSC) on Saturday night at University Field.
Beard notched her first two-goal game of the season to lead the Lions back from a 1-0 half-time deficit, while freshman forward Chrissy Darwell (Cranston, R.I.) notched a pair of assists in the game. The win was the Lions’ second straight in extra time, and improved their overtime record to 3-0 for the season.
With time ticking down in the first half, Rollins scored the game’s opening goal. A header from midfielder Jessica Mooney was run onto by striker Lindsay Giblin. The Tars’ leading scorer raced in on goal and slotted an effort beyond Saint Leo ‘keeper Lauren Hudson (Jr., Odessa, Fla.) to give the visitors the 1-0 lead with 11 seconds left in the first half.
The Lions equalized early in the second half, as in the 47th minute a long kick out from Hudson was flicked on by Darwell. Beard was on the end of the header came in one-on-one with the keeper before calmly finishing off the equalizer.
Neither side could find the winner in the closing 43 minutes of regulation forcing extra time for the second consecutive match at University Field.
As the first overtime period was winding down, Darwell worked hard to win possession on the left, and played a ball to Evelina Viiri (Jr., Heby, Sweden). Viiri played a one-touch pass through to Beard who fired into the back of the net for the game-winner and her third goal of the season.
Saint Leo will head to St. Petersburg, Fla. on Tuesday for another Sunshine State Conference match, as the Lions will face Eckerd College. The match is scheduled to kick off at 5:00 p.m.
