Manchester, N.H.. (August 23, 2007) – The No. 19 Saint Leo University women’s soccer team (0-1) opened its 2007 season with a 3-2 loss on the road to Southern New Hampshire University (1-0) on Thursday afternoon at Larkin Field in Manchester, N.H.

Evelina Viiri (Jr., Heby, Sweden) scored a goal and added an assist, but the Lions were unable to hold a first half lead.  Chrissy Darwell (Fr., Cranston, R.I.) was also able to find the back of the net for Saint Leo in her first career match.

Viiri started the scoring the ninth minute, as she floated a free kick from the left of the penalty area into the far side of the net.  Darwell then doubled the Lions’ advantage when she was able to find the back of the net following a corner kick.  Stacey Rodwell (Fr., Southport, England) was able to deliver the cross, which led to the goal while Viiri was also credited with an assist.

The Lions held the advantage until late in the first half when SNHU pulled a goal back with just 1:23 left in the opening half.

Following the half-time interval, the home team turned its momentum into the equalizer, as Nicole Ebner scored from a free kick to level the sides at 2-2.  The eventual game-winner came just eight minutes later, as the Penmen’s Katherine Ross fired home from the edge of the area to give the home side the lead for good.

The Lions will conclude their two-game trip to New Hampshire on Sunday with a 11:00 a.m. match at Saint Anselm College.
