Saint Leo, Fla. (September 19, 2006) – The No. 19 ranked Saint Leo University women’s soccer team (6-1-1, 2-1 SSC) was edged 2-1 by the 8th ranked University of Tampa (6-1, 2-0 SSC) in a Sunshine State Conference match on Tuesday evening. The start of the game was delayed by nearly an hour due to severe weather.
Tampa senior defender Malana Winskas popped up to head home a deflected corner kick by Allison Penland in the 106th minute to help Tampa complete a comeback victory and end Saint Leo’s seven match unbeaten run to start the season.
Saint Leo had opened the scoring in the 47th minute following a scoreless first half. Freshman forward Hannah Beard (Liverpool, England) scored her team-leading sixth goal when she collected a rebound from a failed clearance and slotted into an empty net.
The visitors equalized in the 59th minute when a free kick from Penland was flicked by Kara Rasmussen and went beyond the reach of Lions’ goalkeeper Lauren Hudson (So., Odessa, Fla.).
Neither team could find the back of the net during the closing minutes of regulation, and both sides had efforts cleared off the line in the extra time before Winskas scored the winner in the sixth minute of double overtime.
Saint Leo will host Florida Southern College in a non-conference match on Saturday at 1:00 p.m. The game will be broadcast live on the SLU Athletics Audiocast Network at www.saintleolions.com.
