Saint Leo, Fla. (June 27, 2007) – Saint Leo head women’s soccer coach Ged O’Connor has announced the addition of six new players for the 2007 season.  The additions include four defenders and two forwards who will add to an already deep squad.

O’Connor guided the Lions to the most successful season in program history during his first year in charge of the program in 2006.  The Lions set new program records for overall wins in a single season (14), conference wins (6), fewest losses (3) and earned their first-ever berth in the NCAA Division II Tournament during the 2006 season.  Saint Leo also advanced to its first-ever SSC Tournament Final after its highest-ever finish in the league in second-place.

2007 SAINT LEO WOMEN’S SOCCER TEAM SIGNINGS

Stacey Rodwell
5’8”, Freshman, Midfielder/Forward
Southport, England/Christ the King Catholic HS

Coach O’Connor’s Thoughts: “Stacey is a dynamic player who has previously played for many respected clubs at home in England.  She brings an added dimension to our attacking lineup, and is sure to challenge for a starting position in her first year.  We expect great things from Stacey.”

Dariela Alcantara
5’9”, Freshman, Defender
Tampa, Fla./Tampa Catholic HS

Coach O’Connor’s Thoughts: “Dariela will come in and be an added force in our defense.  Her ability in the air will provide added cover for our defense and also provide an aerial threat in attack, especially from set pieces.  She was an MVP in high school, a member of a nationally recognized club program and was also an ODP participant.  Her credentials speak for themselves and I expect Dariela to become a regular and lead by example.”

Chrissy Darwell
5’8”, Freshman, Forward
Cranston, R.I./Cranston West HS

Coach O’Connor’s Thoughts: “Chrissy was a three-time First Team All-State selection in high school.  She is a threat against any team, is very versatile and is also an extremely coachable player.  She brings pace, athleticism and has scored goals against opposition at both club and high school levels.  I am expecting Chrissy to be able to contribute immediately to our program.”

Caitlin Day
5-3, Freshman, Defender
Englewood, Colo./Cherry Creek HS

Coach O’Connor’s Thoughts: “Caitlin is a vocal, physical, strong, athletic player whose attributes will be a welcome addition to the program.  She is a tenacious athlete who plays for a nationally recognized club program with the Colorado Rush.  Caitlin is excellent with both feet and will be happy to venture forward and join the attack when presented with the opportunity.”

Claire Gibbons
5’9”, Freshman, Defender/Midfielder
London, England

Coach O’Connor’s Thoughts: “Claire is a nasty, rugged defender who has recently completed a stint with Charlton Athletic Ladies from the English Premier League.  Although recovering from an injury, Claire’s experience at such a high level will undoubtedly bring increased competition for places at the back.  I look forward to having Claire in the program for many years to come.”

Sarah Savage
5'6", Freshman, Defender
Frankfort, Ill./Lincoln-Way East HS

Coach O'Connor's Thoughts: "Sarah is a hard-working, rugged defender who I anticipate will come into our side and challenge for significant playing time immediately.  She will be an asset to our team and I am glad to welcome her into the program, and look forward to having her here for years to come."

The Lions will return 14 players from the 2006 team that went 14-3-2 and finished second in the Sunshine State Conference with a 6-2 record in league play.  Among the returners are three All-South Region selections and six All-Sunshine State Conference Team members.  In addition, the team will welcome redshirt freshman Sian Webster (Flintshire, Wales) who will join the team in 2007 after overcoming injuries from 2006.

Saint Leo will begin its 2007 campaign on the road with a two-game road trip to New Hampshire.  The Lions will face Southern New Hampshire University on August 23 at 4:00 p.m. and will then face St. Anselm College on August 26 at 11:00 a.m.
