Tampa, Fla. (November 3, 2006) – The University of West Florida (15-2-3) edged Saint Leo University (14-3-2) in a penalty shootout on Friday at Tampa’s Pepin Stadium to advance to the NCAA South Region Final. The two sides finished regulation tied 1-1 and played two scoreless overtime periods before UWF came away with a 7-6 win in penalties.
The final shootout goal was scored by Argonauts’ forward Patricia Toledo, who had earlier delivered the assist on the equalizer to force extra time with 36-seconds remaining in regulation.
Each side was perfect through the first six rounds of spot kicks before Saint Leo midfielder Bridget Godwin (So., Ocean Springs, Miss.) saw her effort hit off both posts and bounce out with UWF goalkeeper Courtney Jones beaten. That allowed Toledo to make it a perfect 7-for-7 for the Argos in the shootout and send the ninth-ranked team in the country into Sunday’s South Region title game.
Saint Leo took the lead in the 39th minute against the run of play when Hannah Beard (Fr., Liverpool, England) followed up a rebound from her own shot to score her 10th goal of the season. The lead remained intact until half-time sending the Lions to the locker room with a 1-0 lead.
Late in the second half, a penalty kick was awarded to UWF and forward Audia Sullivan stepped to the spot. Sullivan’s effort went wide of the left post, keeping the Lions in front.
However, with 36-seconds remaining the ball was swung into the penalty area by Sullivan and a header down by Toledo was deflected in by defender Summer Savage to knot the score at one apiece.
In the extra time, neither side could find a way past their opponent’s defense, sending the game into the shootout. After the first six penalty takers had scored for each side, Godwin was the first to miss and Toledo made no mistake with her effort.
