Lions fall to #14 Queens (N.C.), 20-13, in a high-scoring affair

SAINT LEO, Fla. – The Saint Leo women's lacrosse team dropped a non-conference match to No. 14 Queens (N.C.) in a high-scoring affair on Wednesday night at University Turf Stadium, falling 20-13.

Standout freshman Kaylah Walstad earned her first career hat-trick, adding one assist. Offensively, four different Lions netted two goals, including Katherine Larson, Abbie Ross, Allie Sheftall, and Caroline Fraser.

Saint Leo capitalized on seven of eight free position attempts, while the Royals only scored three on eight attempts.

How It Happened 

1H | Walstad opened up the half with her first goal in the first 30 seconds to give the Lions the lead. Queens (N.C.) retaliated with two unanswered goals until Sheftall and Walstad each added one on hard drives to the cage. The Royals took their first lead of the half, adding two unanswered goals before Walstad found a streaking Caroline Fraser on the arc to record her first of the game. Queens (N.C.) went on a 2-0 run when Fraser responded once again with an unassisted fast-break goal. Fraser and Sheftall goals sandwiched a Royals point to continue with the back-and-forth action. An Abbie Ross free position goal followed another Royals two-goal run. Queens (N.C) found the back of the net twice before Ross tallied her second. The Royals closed the half on a 3-0 run. | Queens (N.C.) 14-8 | 

2H | Saint Leo opened up the second similar to the first, finding the back of the net just 30 seconds in, as Jennifer Doyle tallied the free position goal. Two unanswered goals from the Royals forced Walstad and Kathryn Casey to become more aggressive offensively, and they capitalized on their aggressive attack, each scoring for the Lions. The Royals marked three more goals on the scoreboard to stretch the lead. Katherine Larson put in the last two goals for the Lions before a Queens (N.C.) goal finalized the score. | Queens (N.C.) 20-13 |
