Lions victorious in home opener

SAINT LEO, Fla. – The Saint Leo women's lacrosse team took on Gannon University in its home opener on Friday evening and fans in attendance were not disappointed as the Lions took down the Golden Knights, 11-7.

Freshman keeper Rebecca Halley earned her first career win in net, recording 10 saves.

Offensively, the Lions saw eight different players net a goal, led by junior Kelsey Burns, who had three of the 11 goals. Saint Leo saw another freshman have a break-out game as Kaylah Walstad matched Burns in points, scoring two goals and adding an assist.

How It Happened 

1H | Gannon opened up the game with two goals in the first 10 minutes until Burns ignited the Lions offense, scoring two goals within four minutes of each other. Burns' two goals sandwiched a Jennifer Doyle strike, giving the Lions a three-goal run. The Golden Knights responded by tying the game on a Kierstyn Haight goal. The Lions and the Knights then battled back and forth until Burns' third goal gave the Lions the lead before half time. | Saint Leo 5-4 | 

2H | The Green and Gold came out firing as three different players netted one to start the second half. Katherine Larson, Emily Pittenger, and Neely Regan all contributed to the four-goal lead. Gannon mounted a small come-back scoring on back-to-back free position goals. Walstad halted the Golden Knights by adding two scores before Gannon's Kaitie Babiarz gave the game its final outcome. | Saint Leo 11-7 |
