Women's Lacrosse falls short to Roberts Wesleyan

SAINT LEO, Fla. -- Senior Christina Menneci led the Lions with three points on three goals, but Saint Leo fell short to visiting Roberts Wesleyan 9-8 in double overtime Wednesday at University Turf Stadium. 

Senior Alix Murray notched two goals, while Abbie Ross, Katherine Larson and Kelsey Burns each tallied one goal for Saint Leo (1-1). 

Roberts Wesleyan (2-0) was led by Loren Dunn who recorded a game high six goals. 

The Lions netted back-to-back goals in the opening three minutes and gave Saint Leo an early 2-0 advantage. Murray and Burns each scored on free position shots. The Redhawks answered with a 3-0 run across six minutes, and took a 3-2 lead. Minneci scored her first goal of the contest with four minutes left in the first period and evened the score. 

The game seesawed back and forth, but Saint Leo didn't take the lead until Minneci scored her third goal of the contest with 7:41 left in the contest. The Lions, with a 6-5 edge used the momentum swing and Larson scored two minutes later for a 7-5 Saint Leo lead.

In the final two minutes of action, Roberts Wesleyan scored two goals and sent the game into overtime. 

The first overtime period was tightly contested, but Abbie Ross forced a free position and scored before the midway break. Moments later Ali Fox put the Redhawks back in contention. With a score of 8-8, the game went into double-overtime. 

Dunn netted the final goal and ended the contest 20 seconds into the second bonus after Saint Leo goalie, Brittany Millsap, made a great save.

Saint Leo held the edge in shots (32-23), ground balls (31-17) and draw controls (11-10). Roberts Wesleayn's Shannon Knapp made 16 saves on 24 shots while Millsap tallied nine saves against 18 shots.
