Women’s lax downs Molloy in season opener

SAINT LEO, Fla. – Senior Christina Minneci and freshman Abbie Ross each scored twice to lead Saint Leo women's lacrosse to an 11-7 win over Molloy College, Friday night at the University Turf Stadium.

The win marked the second straight victory for Saint Leo in a season opener.

Saint Leo (1-0) broke a one-goal game wide open midway through the second half with back-to-back goals by Minneci and Katherine Larson, both off free position shots. That left the Green and Gold with an 8-5 lead with 12:18 remaining in the frame.

After Molloy's Casey Naab answered with a free position goal of her, Saint Leo rattled off three straight goals to effectively put the game out of reach.

Caroline Fraser opened the sequence with an unassisted strike at the 9:38 mark of the second half, and Ross connected on her second marker of the night on a free position shot just over two minutes later. Kelsey Burns capped the run on a goal with 5:12 remaining off an assist from Burns, giving Saint Leo an 11-6 lead.

Minneci also tallied two assists for Saint Leo to finish the night with four points. Burns, Fraser, and senior Alix Murray all had two points on the night with one goal and one assist each.

Senior Joanna Chadwick, junior Kelly Smigiera, and sophomore Emily Pittenger all added single goals for Saint Leo.

Naab paced Molloy with four goals while Shannon Defliese, Jessica Markowitz, and Kim Pepe all recorded one goal apiece.

Saint Leo goalie Brittany Millsap charted four saves on the 11 shots on goal she faced, while Molloy's Laura Vetter tallied eight saves. Saint Leo outshot Molloy 27-13, and had 20 ground balls to Molloy's 10.

Saint Leo returns to action on Wednesday, Feb. 18, when it faces Roberts Wesleyan at 4:00 p.m. at the University Turf Stadium.
