Women’s lax names captains for 2015 campaign

SAINT LEO, Fla. – Saint Leo women's lacrosse has tabbed two seniors and two juniors as its team captains for the 2015 season.

Senior midfielder Joanna Chadwick, senior attack Alix Murray, junior midfielder Allie Sheftall, and junior defender Cassie Miller were selected as captains based on their leadership exhibited during the recent fall slate of workouts.

"We have confidence that these four student-athletes will represent our core values as a team on and off the field.  They will provide leadership and support to our team this spring and will help propel us to that next level," said Saint Leo head women's lacrosse coach Lesley Graham.

Chadwick will enter her final season at Saint Leo with the rare honor of being a four-time team captain during her career. Including her final two seasons at Tampa Catholic, Chadwick has been a team captain in each of her last six seasons as a student-athlete. She was fourth on the team in goals last season with 22 and fifth in total scoring with 24 points, and recorded 34 ground balls.

Murray charted 14 goals and a team-leading 14 assists last season for the Green and Gold, and enters her final campaign with career totals of 48 goals and 34 assists. 27 of her 30 total shots last season were on goal for a 90.0% on goal percentage, the highest of any member of the team.

Sheftall was Saint Leo's top goal scorer last season with 31 goals, 20 of which were on free position shots. She was second on the team with 36 points, and paced the Lions with her 43 ground balls and 48 draw controls.

Miller was a leader of the Green and Gold's defensive unit, and contributed one goal and two assists to the offense. She recorded 21 ground balls in 2014 as part of a defensive unit that kept opponents under 11 goals on average per game.

"Cassie, Jojo, Alix, and Allie are hardworking, talented players who will balance each other well in their role of captain," said Graham. "Each of these four have exhibited strong leadership qualities throughout their years on the squad and bring a unique personality to the mix.  They collectively have a team first mentality and are always willing to go the extra mile to make us successful. We know that this year they will rise to the occasion and we are looking forward to a successful 2015 season."

The Lions open their 2015 season on Friday, Feb. 13, when they host Molloy College at University Stadium in the first of 11 home games. The 2015 season marks the first in which Saint Leo will compete for a Sunshine State Conference championship, and the conference slate opens on Wednesday, April 1, when the Green and Gold play host to the University of Tampa.
